 A Rochester, Michigan native, Anna Thompson is a soprano based in Philadelphia, PA, who has been lauded for performances possessing both “power and grace” and for having “anchored the opera’s emotional center” (San Francisco Classical Voice).

In the 2025/2026 season, Anna joins the Academy of Vocal Arts as a Resident Artist, where she will debut as Contessa Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro under the baton of Joseph Colaneri and Countess Madeleine in Strauss’ Capriccio. Next summer, Anna joins the Merola Opera Program to sing Micäela in Peter Brook’s Le Tragédie de Carmen. This season, Anna also makes her Carnegie Hall debut with the American Symphony Orchestra as the soprano soloist in George Bristow’s Niagara Symphony.

During the 2024-2025 season, Anna debuted the role of Marie Antoinette in The Ghosts of Versailles and the title role in Alcina at Rice University. As a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, she covered Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus. She also appeared in scenes as the title role in Manon and Alice Ford in Falstaff at OTSL’s Center Stage Concert under the baton of Daniela Candillari. Anna also debuted at the Bard Music Festival as the title role in the world premiere of the original French version of Bohuslav Martinů’s Mariken de Nimègue, and as the soprano soloist in Martinů’s The Prophecy of Isaiah with The Orchestra Now.

A seasoned competitor, Anna most recently won a 2025 Sullivan Foundation Award, Special Judge’s Prize at the Gerda Lissner Song Competition, 3rd Place at the Mario Lanza Institute Scholarship Competition, and advances in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition as a Winner of the Philadelphia District. Past honors include being awarded 2nd Place at the James Toland Vocal Arts Competition: Tier II, Winner of the Houston District of the Laffont Competition, and 1st Place of the Fielder Grant from the Music Club of Austin.

At AVA, Anna currently studies with Bill Schuman. Anna recently graduated with her M.M. from Rice University, studying under Nova Thomas. She holds a B.M. from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Nicole Cabell. She is an alumna of the Apprentice Program for Singers at The Santa Fe Opera, Gerdine Young Artist Program at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, the Aspen Music Festival & School, and the Seagle Festival.
